A hydrogen atom has 1 valence electron. Valance electrons are negatively charged particles which are found in the outermost electron shell of an atom. Elements having the same number of valence electrons as hydrogen are grouped in Group 1 of the periodic table of elements. They are also known as the alkali metal group.
