According to the 2008 American Community Survey of the US Census Bureau, Hispanics and Latinos constitute 15.4% of the total United States population, or 46.9 million people. They are the second largest ethnic group or minority in the country, next to non-Hispanic White Americans. Of the nation’s Hispanic population, Mexicans make up the largest composition, followed by Puerto Ricans. Cubans, Salvadorans and Dominicans complete the top half of the Hispanic population in the United States. The other half of the population comes from countries in Central or South America.
