How many HBV carriers are there?

350 million

Believe it or not, worldwide there are approximately 350 million carriers of Hepatitis B virus (HBV).  Unfortunately, we can really speak about an ascendant trend.  Keep in mind that in most of the cases in the world, the majority of carriers are infected either in infancy or during the first 5 years of life through perinatal exposure.  The close person-to-person contact with other infected children represents also a cause of developing HBV.  It is interesting to know that in the developed countries, many persons are believed to have been infected as adults predominately through sexual exposure or by injection drug use.
