How many flea species are there?

Over 2000

Not too many people know that fleas are external parasites, living by hematophagy off the blood of mammals and birds.  Believe it or not, there are over 2000 flea species all over the world.  The most common species include cat flea, dog flea, human flea, moorhen flea, northern rat flea and oriental rat flea.  Needless to say, it is important to know that fleas are generally dark colored, with tube-like mouth-parts adapted to feeding on the blood of their hosts.
