There are 265,800 drug offenders in state prison throughout the United States in 2006, representing about 20% of all state prisoners. This is according to a bulletin published by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics in December 2009. This does not include the number of prisoners incarcerated in American federal prisons.
