A human hand has 27 bones. The fingers have 14 bones called phalanges, the palm has 5 bones called metacarpals (one for each finger), and the wrist has 8 bones called carpals. The phalanges are further classified into the distal, intermediate and proximal phalanges. Each finger has each of the 3 types of phalanges except for the thumb which lacks an intermediate phalange.
