How many AARP members are there?

35.7 million.

As of February 19, 2010, there are 35.7 million members of the American Association of Retired Persons or AARP. This is according to a press release published by the AARP on the same date. A huge controversy broke out in August 2009 following AARP’â„¢s support for President Obama’â„¢s health reform measure, which led to the reported exodus of 60,000 of its members. An Associated Press report, however, quotes an AARP spokesman as saying that AARP gained 400,000 since July 2009.

The number “35.7 million” refers to the number of readers of AARP The Magazine, the definitive voice for 50+ Americans and the world’s largest-circulation magazine. This fact is referenced in our boilerplate and reads:

“…We produce AARP The Magazine, the definitive voice for 50+ Americans and the world’s largest-circulation magazine with over 35.7 million readers…”

As some members opt out of receiving AARP The Magazine, it is inaccurate to use this number to reflect AARP’s membership.
