A press release issued in March 2010 by MXit Lifestyle mentions there are over 19 million MXit registered users, most of them aged between 12 and 25 years, and about 56% of them are male. MXit is a South African mobile instant messenger, released in 2003. In November 2008, MXit reached the 10-million-user milestone.
