Number of Acres in a Square Mile

How many acres are there in a square mile?

A publication by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) states that one square mile is equivalent to 640 acres. Conversely, one acre corresponds to 0.0015625 square miles (mi2). The term acre stems from ager (Latin) and agros (Greek), meaning “field”; this unit formerly represented the land area that a yoke of oxen could till in one day.
