How many African American senators have served in the US senate?

So far, nine African American senators have served in the United States senate.  Out of these 4 were elected by the people, 2 were elected by the Mississippi State Senate and 3 were appointed by a state governor. Barack Obama was the first African American to be elected President of United States. The Senators are:

Hiram Revels and Blanche K. Bruce (elected by the Mississippi State Senate)

Edward Brooke of Massachusetts (took office in 1967)

Carol Moseley Braun and Barack Obama (elected by voters from Illinois)

Roland W. Burris (completed Obama’s term)

Tim Scott and William “Mo” Cowan (appointed by their State’s governor)

Cory A. Booker (elected by citizens of New Jersey).
